Jerome

The gifted theologian and ambidextrously gifted ascetic Eusebius Sophronius Hieronymus aka St Jerome (4th Century) once said….

“Good, better, best. Never let it rest. 'Til your good is better and your better is best”.

And so it proved on Saturday when the U13 Colts ploughed into 3rd position against a rampant Caversham side who drew against league leaders just the week before.

A little apprehensive, squad members ill or missing, we took ourselves to Mt Caversham and Captain Ferguson elected to play downhill after winning the toss. The first half ensued, the Colts seemingly determined to improve on last week’s score-line of 15.

The irony of football!

Despite a 70% gradient advantage, the Colts simply couldn’t hit the back of the net? 25m into the 1st half and I was quite convinced that if a size 4 football just happened to drop earthbound from the myriad of heavens stacked up in the multi storey car park that humans traditionally call Heaven. Postcode/Sat Nav “above the clouds” or somewhere in Milton Keynes, the ball would/could naturally roll into the goal by it’s own volition!
Football tradition!

So in a world that suddenly recognizes the gifts of Mo Salah over Kevin de Bruyne – I suspect St Jerome candidly knew that anything that sounded profound “on the day” is worthy of print!

So again when you hear that there had been a “pitch invasion” at the Olympic Park in a match involving West Ham against Burnley a few weeks back, you might have been forgiven for a wee smile as you recalled halcyon days of yore where human traits such as enthusiasm (crowd interaction/involvement) was just as tolerated as the nonsensical crap that exists in the media today!

So after remodelling an eyebrow we discover that this invasion consisted of no more than 3 people? Cue a spike occurring over the internet as IT cronies whirred away to misdirect and ill inform people that this was another dark day for football and that hooliganism has no place in today’s society? Heaven’s forbid – are these people on one hell of a jolly – do they not read their own guff? Are their eyelids so glued together that that their places of work are not recognised for a visceral dead eyed branch of hooliganism?

Naturally I digress. The match on Saturday ended in a win for a Colts side avid on victory. Two goals “Uphill” from Robocop Jacob and a deserved 1 from a spirited Caversham, Fair result despite the histrionics.

Notables: Sam Roberts application in the face of a tasty left winger. Max Adams, buzzing on meds, after a terrible fight with some fellow called Floyd Hayfeaver? Finally the banter in the car back home!

MOTM: Archie – beginning to understand that hard work today makes for easy work tomorrow.
