Encounter!

Report by XW.

There is a four team mini league forming at the top of the East Berks third division. Caversham Rebels are in that pack and certainly don't concede many. I can see why.

The intrepid U14 Colts had their traditional 9.30 kick off in the Reading suburbs. We shall be asking Marion for a 6am at Kingsfield. Greeted by a pitch that would have made Yeovil's famous Huish Ground look like the venue for a David Bryant v Willie Wood final this was not going to be easy. Usually our front duo of Jacob and Adam swat away central defenders like Jonah Lomu in 93 or like a flustered diner in the wrong Greek taverna does with pesky flies. Not this time. They were expertly marshalled throughout in a scrappy game.

Neither keeper had much to do and half way through the second half this looked like it might be our first nil nil draw since 1972. However, you don't keep Jacob quiet for 70 minutes unless you have a muzzle and a good book. He squeezed past his man and drilled the ball home from the edge of the box. Some of the stuff from our strikers really does belong on Match of the Day and this was such an occasion. First class.

Playing uphill Caversham created very little until a slight defensive mix up saw them equalise from a tight angle.

The next two games are against the 2nd and 3rd place sides. Good tests for the table topping Colts.

Notables: Will at Centre Back and Man of the Match Kaya alongside him were superb. Sam Robert was strong as an ox and had a great game.

1-1
Goal: Jacob
