Door!

Match report by XW.

The four previous games had seen the Colts' title aspirations go all HRexit. Two single goal defeats and a couple of draws had left Colts on the brink requiring snookers, a Japanese trade deal and a load of other mixed metaphors rolled into a win sandwich.

Maidenhead were no slouches, though their parents made simply finding the King's Field tougher than doing the Krypton Factor dressed in a Womble suit. For the 152nd time this season I found myself apologising on behalf of Ordnance Survey. I mean, how hard can it be? We find it each and every week.

Reaching the "ar*e end of Reading" for a 9am kick off with a Vodka Vimto hang over each fortnight is not easy either.

I feel they should know that but resisted the urge whilst untangling the nets. Again. My kids still think that Grandmothers knit Shredded Wheat. Crafting breakfast cereals can be the easier task. I think that some parents believe that goal posts just grow, with a little divine intervention. If the club is ever in need of a fundraiser we could seek out the Carpenters for a remake of the 70s classic, Close to You. Karen could do the "How do posts suddenly appear" bit and Jack Dee impersonator, Paul (voice of a tired Hell's Angel) Kinchin could do the "On the day that we were born the Gaffers ignored the inclement conditions and carried on stoically with help from Glenn" line.

I digress. We needed a win.

And a win we got. Arsene Wenger used to believe the route to glory was paved with one nil wins. And, yesterday, in the swirling winds of a hostile King's Field, I gave a little nod in the Direction of the Gaulish Gaffer.

JB only needs two letters to his name and, seemingly, only one exquisite through ball to set up Jacob for a glorious finish and what turned out to be the Match winner. You would have struggled to have found a better crafted goal anywhere in the country yesterday.

Jacob's twin, Gabriel, is carving quite a reputation for himself at the heart of the Colts defence. Maidenhead just couldn't get past him or the excellent Will.

Notable performances all over the pitch.

A top two finish in a tougher 3rd tier than last season would be a big credit to this side. It is still very much on. The boys can win with swagger or grit. Yesterday they won with both.
