With Ewell being in the league above us, this Cup match was always going to be tough. It was made even tougher when Edward had to pull out due to illness leaving us with only 10 players. Unsportingly, Ewell decided to play at full strength but, rather than capitulate, this seemed to provoke our lads into a reaction and they started the first half with great determination.
We played a 4-4-1 formation with Jack in goal, Harvey operating as the lone striker and Liam filling Edward's spot in defence. We held Ewell at bay, hitting them on the break with good support from midfield. Shortly before half time, Ewell managed to grab a couple of goals - one of which was an absolute screamer. However, our heads didn't drop and we retained our shape for the final few minutes of the half.
During the break, Rio offered to go in goal which meant a few enforced changes. Mason and Louis dropped into defence releasing Liam and Jack into midfield. We came out firing in the second half, quickly winning a penalty which Harvey cooly despatched into the bottom left corner. There were other attempts too but Ewell's man mountain in goal somehow managed to keep us out.
Despite being a man down we held our shape for most of the game. Eventually though, Ewell took advantage of our tiring legs bagging three goals before the full time whistle. This was a shame as the final score didn't really reflect what was happening on the pitch.
Whilst all of our players did well, the Man of the Match award has to go to Ranon. Not only did Ranon track back with speed and purpose, but when he won the ball, he got is head up and picked a pass. Well done all and well done Ranon.
I'm looking forward to next week as there are signs of improvement in all areas of the pitch.
